Game of Chess: All you need to know
What is a chess game?
Chess is a two-player strategy game played on a checkered game-board. The game-board consists of 64 squares arranged in an 8 by 8 grid. The squares are typically black and white, but other color combinations are also possible. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king. This occurs when the king is in a position to be captured (in “check”) and there is no way to move the king out of capture (mate).
The game of chess is thought to have originated in eastern India in the 6th century during the Gupta Empire, where it was known as chaturanga. It then spread westward to Persia, where it was called shatranj, and eventually to Europe, where it became known as chess. The game has been played by kings and commoners, presidents and prisoners, and has been the subject of art, literature, and film.
How is chess game played?
Each player starts the game with all their pieces on the back rank of the gameboard, with the exception of the pawns, which are placed on the second rank. The white player moves first, and the players alternate moves thereafter. A player can move a piece to a different square on the gameboard, capture an opponent’s piece, or perform a special move called “castling.”
The king is the most important piece in the game of chess. It is the piece that the game is won or lost on, as the goal is to checkmate the opponent’s king. The king can move one square in any direction, but it cannot move into a position where it would be in check (i.e. where it could be captured by an opponent’s piece on the next move).
The queen is the most powerful piece on the board. It can move any number of squares along a rank, file, or diagonal. The rooks can move any number of squares along a rank or file. The bishops can move any number of squares along a diagonal. The knights move in a distinct “L” shape: two squares in one direction, and then one square perpendicular to that. The pawns can only move forward one square, but they have the special ability to capture an opponent’s piece by moving one square diagonally.
In addition to the basic movements of the pieces, there are a few special moves in chess. The most important of these is castling, which allows the player to move the king two squares toward a rook on the player’s first rank, then move the rook to the square the king has just crossed. This move allows the player to move the king to a safer position and to bring the rook into the game.
Chess is a game of strategy and tactics. Players must think ahead and anticipate their opponent’s moves in order to succeed. The game has been studied extensively, and there are countless books, websites, and other resources devoted to teaching and studying the game. Many people enjoy playing chess for its intellectual challenge, and the game has even been shown to have cognitive benefits.
Aside being played for fun, chess is also played competitively at the amateur and professional levels. There are many chess tournaments held around the world, and the game even has its own world championship. The current world chess champion is Magnus Carlsen of Norway.
Despite its centuries-old history, chess remains a popular and enduring game. Its simple rules and deep strategic possibilities make it a game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a beginner just learning the rules or a seasoned grandmaster, chess has something to offer everyone.
